5 Essential Job Seeking Strategies to Stand Out in A Competitive Market!
Jul 28, 2024
The market is tight again, layoffs keep trending, and it is a hard reminder to stay on top of your own career. So I asked myself a question I am well placed to answer after more than a decade recruiting in tech: what actually separates the top few percent of job seekers from everyone else?
These are the people who do not just find a job, they land the role they wanted at a company they admire, places like Canva, Google, Amazon, Rokt, Atlassian. Across years of watching it happen, five things came up again and again.
1. Know your unique value, and double down on it
The strongest candidates do not just summarise their experience. They can say clearly what sets them apart, with real examples, telling "I" stories rather than vague "we" ones. And they go one step further: they line that value up against the specific role and company they are targeting. That takes understanding both what you offer and what the employer is actually trying to solve.
2. Get in through people, not just portals
The best candidates often skip the application queue entirely. They build genuine relationships in their industry and come in through referrals, which surface roles that are never advertised and move your resume to the top of the pile. So at the next meetup or conversation, invest in the connection. You rarely know which one will matter later.
3. Show proof, not adjectives
In tech, outcomes speak louder than descriptions. Top candidates demonstrate value with specifics:
- "I rolled out monitoring and observability with DataDog and OpsGenie, trained 30-plus engineers on it, and cut production error rates 20-fold over a few months."
- "I made the case to leadership for an upskilling program, a $3,000 annual training budget per engineer, around $120,000 over two years, plus 100-plus Microsoft and AWS exam vouchers, and a dedicated push on technical debt."
Numbers like these do the convincing for you.
4. Be proactive, not reactive
The standouts think ahead. They study the company's challenges and frame their skills as the solution, and they keep their own skillset aligned with where the business is heading. They are not just along for the ride in their career, they are steering it, planning how to contribute from day one.
5. Ask the questions that show depth
The most impressive candidates treat the interview as a two-way conversation, and they ask sharp questions that prove they have actually thought about the company. Things like:
- "Can you walk me through a recent hard decision the company faced, and how it was handled under pressure?"
- "How does leadership support growth and innovation? Is there an example where an employee's initiative led to real change?"
Those questions signal genuine interest and a level of thinking most candidates never show.
The short of it
Standing out is not luck. Know your value, get in through people, prove your impact with numbers, stay a step ahead, and bring real curiosity to the room. Do those consistently and you stop competing with the crowd.
