How To Overcome Career Stalling: A Guide To Getting Unstuck

career growth Mar 26, 2024

Have you ever felt like you are paddling hard in your career and going nowhere? That is Sandra, a client of mine. Ambitious, hardworking, ready for a more senior role with more scope and, honestly, more money. But the key projects and the visibility she needed to get there kept going elsewhere. She started to suspect her manager was quietly, maybe even deliberately, holding her back.

It has a name, career stalling or career blocking, and it is more common than people think. Here is what I told Sandra.

Build an exit strategy

It sounds drastic, but a planned exit gives you back a sense of control. If you have hit a wall with no real sign of movement, start preparing quietly: refresh the resume, work your network, look at roles that actually match where you want to go. You do not have to leave tomorrow. You just stop being trapped, and that alone changes how you show up.

Have the direct conversation

Ask your manager for a one-on-one about your growth. Go in calm and specific, focused on what you want and how you might get there together. There is a real chance they do not know your aspirations, or have not seen the effect of their own decisions on your path. Sometimes the block is a misunderstanding, and naming it clears it.

Gather evidence and push back

If you think your progression is being blocked, build the case. Collect concrete examples of what you delivered, where you added value, and the moments you were passed over. Bring that to your manager or HR as evidence you are ready for more. Be assertive and professional, advocating for yourself without burning the people who could still help you.

Hold steady while you act

Patience here does not mean passive waiting. It means keeping a level head while you do the work above, taking the next step instead of stewing. A block is a hurdle, not the end of your growth. Sandra's story did not end at the wall, and neither does yours.
