Is That Classic Career Ladder The Right Step for You?

career growth Feb 18, 2024

There is an unspoken blueprint for what success is meant to look like. Good grades, a job at a big-name company, a steady climb up the ladder, each rung a small win. For a long time that script works, or seems to. And then for a lot of people, somewhere around the senior levels, it quietly stops landing.

I hear it often now. The choice between grinding for the next title at the same place or jumping to a bigger logo starts to feel like the same stale meal twice. The climb is still there. The buzz is gone.

The ladder is not the only path

In tech especially, the daydreams start. Some are dramatic, leaving it all to build furniture or run a bookshop. Most are not, consulting, a move into the non-profit world, more time with family, a different kind of work. If the next rung looks about as appealing as stale bread but you cannot yet name what you want instead, you are not lost and you are not alone. You just have not defined success on your own terms yet.

How to start defining it

Start with your values. On the default path it is easy to borrow society's markers and call them yours. Strip it back. What actually matters to you, and why. Not the salary or the title necessarily, maybe integrity, or autonomy, or being near the people you love. Your values are the compass for every decision after this one.

Rethink where work sits. For lifelong high achievers, the idea that work might not be the whole point can feel almost wrong. But it is a fair question. Is work the centre of your life right now, or the thing that funds the centre? There is no correct answer, only yours.

Follow the energy. Notice what pulls your attention and gives you energy rather than draining it. A role at an organisation whose mission you actually care about. A friend's account of freelance life. These small pulls are data. They point somewhere.

Expect some push-back. Step off the marked trail and people will raise an eyebrow, especially the ones deep in the traditional story. Most of that reaction is about their fears, not your choice. Hear it, weigh it, and keep going.

Questions worth sitting with

A client once told me I helped them reach something they could not access alone. It was not advice. It was the questions. A few to sit with:

  • When you strip everything back, which values will you not compromise on?
  • Beyond the paycheck, what makes you feel rich in life, and how do you weigh the two?
  • Picture your life as a whole. Where does work fit, and is that changing?
  • Are you chasing new mountains to climb, or wanting to go deep on what you already do well?
  • Looking back from the future, which moments will make you say, "yes, I did that"?
  • What scares you about the path less travelled, and how much of that fear is actually yours?

You do not have to answer all of them today. You just have to stop pretending the default is the only option. It is your path, and the most satisfying version of success is the one you actually chose.
